I passed you a note last week that my father, Ray Brownwood, had passed onto heaven.

A Memorial Service will be held for him on March 27, 2010 at 11:00 at Community Covenant Church in El Cajon.  The address is 1835 Granite Hills Dr. El Cajon, CA.

I will try to forward a map later.

Flowers are not requested but if you want to make a donation to San Diego Hospice, I know he valued that organization.

CHARLES DUNSON AWARD

BRUCE STALLER, class of '54, heads up the Monrovia Schools Foundation for all of us who care about the state of Monrovia schools.  He has helped the Multiclass Group give scholarships in Mr. Dunson's name for a number of years.  This year a deserving student was awarded $500.  We have given more.  Whatever we are able to give is appreciated but, those of us who treasure the memory of Mr. Dunson would like to see a larger sum for next year.  If you would like to make a Tax Deductible contribution just make out a check to the Monrovia Schools Foundation, P.O. Box 2447, Monrovia, CA 91017.  The  check should be payable to MSF/Charles Dunson Scholarship.  Receipts will be sent.

Bruce will let the madcat.org editors know so that all who reads these pages will be inspired by your gift.

I hope that our current crop of Wildcats have someone sort of like our Charles Dunson.  Folks have mentioned to me that he has influenced their entire lives.  Do you have a story about one of our faculty members that lives on with you?

Let me know at PndrPSmith@aol.com.

CLASS OF '58 GIRLS

Calling all local class of '58 girls.  A get-together is being planned for August 10 at 11:30.  Check out the class of '58 if you are  or if you know a girl from that class.  It sounds like fun.

    THE CLASS OF '54

The class of '54 will be having its 55th class reunion on October 3 at the Santa Anita race track banquet facilities. The class of '53 and '55 are also invited. Actually, it seems that we are invited if we would like to attend. It sounds like a great weekend. It will start at the Double Tree Hotel on Friday evening (the 2nd). There, there will be a not host bar and lots of socializing.  The committee has reserved a block of rooms at the hotel at a discounted price.

Check the class of '54 page to get the details.

TRAVELING 'CATS

Jim and Vangie Regan have been on the go over the last year.  A wonderful trip to Scotland and then in the month of May to South Africa.  Click on Jim's Book Review page to see wonderful pictures of both trips.  Did you know that they rented a care in South Africa and took themselves to such interesting places. Read all about both trips and stay to read the book reviews.

Ian and Hat Heisler Campbell have been living it up. Let me just include a little piece of the note she sent me.  I am sure she would like you all to know all about it.

Had told Pat Johnson that we were going to  go to  Park City to  celebrate our 3rd ann  and she said a MADite lives there....Mike Stephens class of 48.  We found him listed in the phone bk  so  Ian called him.  He seemed happy to  hear from a fellow MADite and knew some of the guys that Ian knew from Stanford (Ian didn't arrive at MAD  till 1950 so didn't know Mike) like  Nuewman Porter and Dick  Burt.  We plan to go and spend a few days with the Larson's  when they're up there this  summer at a time share...Ian suggested we will call him and try to get together...he seemed receptive to that idea.  So  will be fun to meet him.  He remembers Larry.  By the way we had a fabulous time in  PC.....went down to SLC the nite b4 our ann and saw a Indian bead exhibit at the Unv  of UT which was great.  Then a walk thru part of Temple Square to  see the flowers (they always have lovely plantings during  the yr) then cked  into  our hotel right down  town.  We were able  to walk to  the restaurant where we had dinner...The Melting Pot.  I'd  eaten at the one  in  Irvine but a first for Ian.  He really enjoyed all the fondue we had!  The next am after brkfst we drove  up  to  Park City...it was early but decided to  see where our  lodge was located...when we found it  we were  able to ck in as there was practically no one  there.  What a lovely rm....great view....still a lot  of snow  around.  Then a trip downtown where we walked up one side  of the main  street and  down the other.  Stopped in a funky bar with peanuts on the counter and shared a tasty dark draft brew....made there in PC.   Back to the Lodge where we put the fireplace on (gas) and shared a bottle of bubbly.  Had dinner in  the lodge restaurant with our table overlooking one of  the  ski lifts...in fact you could  go right out the door with your skis and be on the lift in a second or two.  The dinner  was a 3 course..offered with the special pkg deal they were offering...and a surprise was that  we could have anything on the menu.  Usually they keep to  the low  end of  the  menu.  We shared a bottle of wine and took over 3 hrs enjoying ourselves.  After dinner we went back to our rm, out to the deck and into  the hot tub...the nite  was cold  but the tub nice and warm.  We had huge fluffy white  towels to  use and then terry cloth robes  to get warm in.  We enjoyed it  so much we said we should do  this  every year!!!

Monrovia Day weekend seems to be a time of the year when so many folks are traveling.  There are weddings and graduations galore during those early days of summer.  Bruce and Mariellen Matthews Staller had birthdays to attend to in Henderson Nevada.

Jim and Vangie Brownwood Regan and Larry and Marjean Brownwood Larson will be visiting Ian and Harriett Heisler Campbell (in Utah) after they meet in Calgary, Alberta Canada where they met to have a ceremony to put Vangie and Marjean's mom into the grave with her mother. (Don and I did the same thing with the ashes of his mother)

The Larson will be leaving the Campbells on the 25th of July and going to Park City for three weeks. The Ian and Harriett with be going up to stay with them on August 8,9, and 10.  It does sound like fun. Stories about Wildcat marrying Wildcats and Wildcat that stay in touch are my favorite stories.

JACKIE ANTISTA HARRIS

CLASS OF 1954

Jackie sent me her birthdate and that encouraged me to try to get the birthday sidebar up and running again.

She lives in Palm Springs but is ready to come home to Monrovia.  Finding affordable housing in our wonderful Monrovia- Arcadia-Duarte neighborhoods is a bit daunting.

She would love to be able to attend Monrovia Day functions. And to live in a safer neighborhood.

I have included a story the she sent me that may be one of the reasons she would like to relocate.

Two street type gang members approached me couple of weeks ago as I was about to enter my door one night and one of them spoke to me: "Maam, I need money.  I need money, now. If u don't give me ur money, I'm going to step on ur toes!"  I looked down at my newly manicured toes and suddenly this power welled up inside me as the Lion of Judah lunged at them screaming: "Ohhh no ur not!!! You get out of here now! I'm calling the police!!"  I kept yelling these commands at them over and over, and they got really scared and backed off running. (You should have seen their faces. The look on the face of one was saying 'Don't hit me, maam, don't  hit me!)  I haven't seen them since. Praise the Lord!

Pls feel free to quote the above incident.

The art show that Jackie had earlier in the year was mentioned here in the Ponderings.  She wrote to tell me that she sold three paintings at that show.

WHAT WILDCATS DO

George Wagner is from the class of 1950. (A very good class) A while back George mentioned that he was involved with Wind Harvest Company. I have not heard from him for a while so I just went to the internet and look what I found.

George Wagner, Co-Founder, President
A former prosecutor with the City of Los Angeles, and an attorney in private practice, Mr. Wagner was co-founder and President of the California League of Conservation Voters, and Executive Director of the Jung Institute of Los Angeles.  He was also co-chairman of the campaign for the California Coastal Protection Act. He has been a leader in the environmental movement for several decades.  He holds a B.S. from UCLA and a Law Degree from Southwestern Law School.  George has shared administrative duties of the Wind Harvest Company with Robert Thomas for the past 20 years. Through his capital raising abilities, George has insured that WHC has continued its valuable research and development work and that international patents were secured. He lives in Point Reyes, California and manages the WHI administrative office there.

Increasing the Yield of Wind Farms Around the World

The world needs new technology that will allow more of its clean, renewable wind resources to be profitably utilized.  Developing wind turbines that can last up to 40+ years in rugged conditions is not easy and takes years of field-testing.   In addition, designing turbines that are inexpensive, able to be mass manufactured in existing facilities and easy to transport, install and maintain is even more difficult.  Achieving these objectives will result in a dramatic expansion of the amount of wind energy produced around the world in the decades to come.

Wind Harvest International (WHI) has done the work needed to bring a breakthrough wind turbine technology to the commercial wind farm market that meets these objectives.  The original Wind Harvest Company installed and tested its first turbine model in the late 1970s.  Over the next 25 years, Wind Harvest tested ten additional models and gained over 40,000 hours of operating experience in high wind locations.  Now WHI is ready to start the commercialization process for the Windstar Linear Array Vortex Turbine System (LAVTS), the only wind energy technology capable of adding an understory of turbines and doubling the output of wind farms with good near ground-level wind resources.

WHI is confident its technology can help wind farms and utilities in other ways such as:
   *  double the energy output of a wind farm
   *  improve wind farm capacity factors
   *  reduce the need for new land, roads and infrastructure
   *  reduce opposition because of impacts to views
   *  likely not harm birds

This web site is a work in progress.  Please check back in the months to come as the first Windstar 1500 LAVTS gets closer to installation.

BIRTHDAYS

Maybe some of you have noticed that the birthday sidebar on the Pondering Page has remained in sort of a frozen state for I do not know how long.  Anyway the month that it froze was August and it is about to be August again.

Gary Dayton our editor and publisher has given up nudging me and now I am really ready to get to tending to that fun activity again.  I will try to find all that I know about Wildcat Birthdays and I would really like it if you would send me your birth date.  I have a little file box somewhere here on this table I call my desk that contains lots of birthdays. Now I think that I am savvy enough about this word processing machine that I can manage to maintain an electronic file.  Soooo if Gary is willing to take me on I will upgrade the August birthdays and be ready to attend to September.
